Best of Toronto’s Portuguese Bakeries
Bread is one of the simplest foods most of us adore, especially when it’s pulled out of the oven nice and hot. Yummy. These bakeries also specialize in other treats too, including pastries and cakes, and of course the ever famous Portuguese custard tart.
This family-owned and operated, little Portuguese bakery has been around for nearly five years. Happy Bakery’s decor is uplifting, cheerful and very welcoming. It’s a place you definitely want to go with friends for a coffee or a bit to eat. They serve up fresh, hot bread on a daily basis from french sticks, to buns and loaves of bread. There’s a hot table component with soup, sandwiches, and other delicious dishes. Caldense Bakery has been one of the leading suppliers of some of the finest European pastries and breads serving the GTA since 1968. Dubbed by many as the home of the Portuguese custard tart, otherwise known as the famous pastel de nata, there is nothing Caldense Bakery isn’t committed to doing perfectly. My favourite bread is their padas - a sourdough bun so flavourful you can eat it right out of the oven with nothing else in it. They offer a number of different breads from portuguese buns (papesecos) to sweet bread (pão doce). Caldense is also known for making speciality cakes for weddings, anniversaries, baptisms, birthdays and more. More
Courense Bakery is one of my favourite places to stop by for an iced latte and their delicious pastéis de bacalhãu (cod cakes) - that is, next to my mother-in-law’s recipe. Another savory treat on their menu are their pastéis de camarão (shrimp patties). For 25 years, this family-owned and run bakery has catered to their multi-cultural community’s events and private parties. They too, have a hot table full of fresh made dishes available on a daily basis, an ice cream bar featuring the famous Sicilian Ice Cream, and are highly known for their extravagant wedding cakes. In fact, their cake decorator who has been working at Courense for 20 years, has been nicknamed “The Toronto Cake Boss.” More
When you walk along Dundas St., it’s not hard to find a shop, cafe, bakery - a place to sit down and enjoy an espresso and a creamy dessert. The trick is finding a good one! This Nova Era location has been a staple in the portuguese community for over 19 years. Sure there’s been competition around trying to bring them down, but no matter what has been thrown in their way, Nova Era stands tall and proud. There doors are open to everyone. Walk by on a friday night, and you’ll be waiting a while to get a seat. They are that popular and that good! They serve all the typical bakery products - coffee, beverages, breads, sandwiches, soups, cheeses, deli meats, cakes and pastries too. The real indulgence here are their custard tarts, warmed up and sprinkled with icing sugar and a few pinches of cinnamon! Bon appetite! More
